This pandemic has caused us all to take pause like never before. While in self-quarantine I have been keeping track of my more optimistic days and what brings me comfort and peace. If any of you are off of your initial pandemic highs, here are a few things that may bring you comfort.
FIND COMFORT
In times like this, it’s worth knowing there have always been times like this. We are all descendants of a person who went through much worse than us. From The Spanish Flu to The Black Plague, The Civil War; all with less medical technology and things to keep us entertained. At first, we were all trying to make the best of it. Rearrange our closets, clean out the garage, spend more time cooking. But after two months of this, we nearly want to pull our hair out. We have started to revert to a more emotional state with a lot of the reality sinking in, uncertainty and acceptance of this new normal.
JOURNAL
Your grandchildren will want to know what you were doing in the year 2020. So journal it. If you picked up your grandmother’s journal from The Great Depression there are probably so many emotions and stories to be told.
LEARN HOW TO LIVE
You can learn how you’d do something differently in the future. By being forced to be a stay at home parent and loving this time with your little one, for your next child, you might elect to do the same thing even though you aren’t forced to stay home.
FORCED DECISIONS
It would’ve been irresponsible to leave a high paying job before even though you weren’t crazy about it. But now many people have lost these jobs. This may not be the decision you would’ve made, but deep down you agree with. It gives you the opportunity to question: was I happy in that job? Would I be happier in a less expensive city with more space? When life makes some decisions for you, it gives you the opportunity to pivot in a way you may never have.
STILLNESS
In a world with constant stimulation with instant gratification, this pandemic is allowing us more time to be still. And stillness can promote focus, peace, and a clear my mind.
PURPOSE
What is the meaning of life? Rather than asking life what the meaning of life is, you have to tell life what the meaning is.
REAVULATE
Reevaluate the decisions and choices that shape the way you live your life. After all, how you spend your days is how you spend your life. Decide what’s important and what’s not important. What makes you feel worthwhile rather than worthless.
LIVE FOR THE MOMENT
There is a saying that if you wait, all that happens is that you get older. Am I going to live in this experience? Or wait for this moment (or pandemic) to be over. What’s on the other side could be much worse. So you can either choose to just get by right now or be made better for it by living for the moment.
CHANGE YOUR MINDSET
Sometimes one simple word can change how you look at things. I always would hear my friends say, “ugh, I have to go to work tomorrow.” And I’d correct them and say, “no, you get to go to work tomorrow.” And the same goes for this pandemic during the Coronavirus.
When things like this happen, look at how it’s happening for you as opposed to it to you.
